Folktales
Shorelines is a writers' organisation based in Manchester, UK. Over the past four years Shorelines has conducted workshops involving over 5,000 children, many teachers, parents and educationalists. These workshops foregrounded story telling, folklore and cultural heritage and took place across the North West of England. The project to collect and share the oral tradition of storytelling was born out of this experience.

We collected stores from a variety of people in Manchester, Oldham and Bradford. Prior to the completion of our project, we learnt with great sadness that one of the people who contributed a tale, Tariq Ajiz from Oldham passed away.

We collected many of the stories in the indigenous languages in which they were told. We believe that languages other than English are as much a part of UK heritage as English.

We not only collected stories but also shared this heritage, during the course of our project with over a thousand children and many teachers and parents in four different schools in Manchester, in a Festival of Stories. We hope to further develop the festival of stories in the coming years.

As well as this website and the Festival of Stories, we have documented and preserved the heritage via CDs which recorded the work produced.
